The prophecy above delineates the second coming of Christ, but the Word now begins another subject in which he declares the kindness of God to the people of the Jews. And he voices his accusation as from the mouth of the people, presenting through his statement the abandonment and final desolation of Jerusalem that has happened in the righteous judgment of God. Therefore, he says: I called to mind the mercy of the Lord, and he continues on: The virtues of the Lord I shall recall. And I shall surely never let the incredible kindness of his mercy slip into forgetfulness, but I shall always call to mind his mercy and the marvelous deeds that he showed to us. We may be saddened to know that the nation and the city of Jerusalem came under the anger of God in the end, when its temple was delivered over to be destroyed to the very foundations. But instead of in all the things which he rewards us, Symmachus says: Concerning all the things in which he showed us kindness. And, again, instead of the Lord is a good judge to the house of Israel, and so on, Symmachus says: The Lord showed an abundance of goodness to the house of Israel, who showed them kindness according to his compassion. Therefore, he says I shall recall all these things and enumerate the abundance of his goodness, whereby he granted them vast grace and deemed the people worthy to be called “his children” if “they do not reject his grace.”

I remembered the mercy of the Lord, I will call to mind the virtues, the praise of the Lord for all that he bestows on us. Having prophesied the ineffable philanthropy of the Lord and having foretold the salvation that came through the incarnation, he very reasonably added: I remembered the mercy of the Lord. For the grace of the incarnation is of mercy and philanthropy. However, Aquila translated "virtues" as "hymns," and Theodotion and Symmachus as "praises"; and Symmachus “He has done good,” he said. The Seventy, however, have more accurately put “He repays”; for since we owed a penalty, but received salvation instead of a penalty, they have reasonably put “He repays” instead of: He rewards us with the opposite, giving good things instead of bad. For Aquila also has put this meaning. The Lord is a just judge to the house of Israel, he brings upon us according to his mercy and according to the multitude of his justice. He does not judge using justice alone, but mixes the just with mercy, or rather: love for mankind conquers the just.
