The Word prophesied about the appearance of Christ and of his apostles and his dominion with right “judgment” when it said: “See, a just king will reign, and rulers will rule with judgment.” Then, after continuing on to discuss the conversion of the Gentiles to God, he addresses the people of the circumcision and exhorts those who are broken off and cut off to lament as those who “who have fallen away from the grace of God” because of their faithlessness toward God. And moving on, he says that their souls are unmanly and effeminate and calls them women. And it is clear that he is speaking about their synagogues in the prophecy. Rise up, you wealthy women, or according to the other Greek translations: You flourishing women. For there was a time when they were truly “rich according to God” and flourishing. If therefore he says that they are rich and flourishing, it is because it seems as though they are abounding and faring sumptuously in bodily riches. Therefore, the Word recommends to them that they not attend to the things that have been said in a sluggish or shoddy way but in an alert and orderly fashion. Therefore, he says: Rise up and hear my voice. But it is not as though he commands those who have fallen to stand up, is it? But instead of daughters in hope, the other Greek translations all say unanimously: Obedient daughters. For then they still assumed that they would always be wealthy and flourishing, and they were proud and trusted in their wealth. And one could say that the first women stand for the assemblies of the Jews in former days and the multitudes who were gathered in them, and then one would assume that the daughters would be their synagogues in the latter days.

For days of a year make remembrance in pain with hope. Through "a year" he has indicated all manner of benefactions: the turns of the seasons, the changes of the airs, the fall of rains, the various winds, the fruits produced from the earth through these. And he exhorts them to be in pain and to hope at the same time; to be in pain on account of their sins, but to hope and wait for the God of all. The vintage is consumed, it has ceased and will no longer come.
