And therefore a curse will devour the earth, because those who inhabit it have sinned. And just as in the beginning of the creation of the world, while there was not yet any foundation of sin, “God blessed man,” so also at the “consummation of the age” he says that a curse will then devour the earth, or, according to Symmachus: Because of this curse the earth mourned. For because of the curse that came on all people, the earth, as the mother who had given birth to them and nursed them, will take up mourning for them. And again, instead of therefore those who dwell in the earth will be poor, Symmachus said: therefore they will be 156 exhausted. And of all those who will suffer these things on the earth, a certain few will be left, and they will be those who preserve “the likeness of the man of heaven” in their souls.
