The three Greek versions unanimously translate the next verse as follows: And the Lord will curse the tongue of the sea of the Egyptians. The Word is accustomed to calling the multitude of ungodly people “the sea,” for the sea is full of evil salt water. He says that the Lord will curse, so that that they might no longer confess with the tongue the superstitious error in Egypt and instead learn “to speak” the sayings of God and “to swear by the name of the Lord.” It is important to understand that when in the above discussions the word mentions our Savior, it is Jesus who is being identified. In the Hebrew version the text reads: “Behold, God is my Savior; I will trust in him.” The Hebrew word underlying the translation “my Savior” is Jeshuathi; and again, in the phrase “out of the springs of salvation,” where the Greek reads “of salvation,” the Hebrew is Jeshua. Thus the word did not delay in mentioning the Edomites and the Moabites and the sons of Ammon among the above names, 90 for they were the most superstitious nations, and they were hostile and opposed to the God of the prophets. And yet, incredible though it may be, he prophesies that these very nations will receive the doctrine of Christ. In the same manner, he also speaks propitiously of the idolatry of the Egyptians, for it will indeed be abolished at the revealed time. But the present word does not concern the Egyptians. For the prophecy concerning the Egyptians is spelled out in the familiar oracle which commences: “A vision concerning Egypt,” from which “there is a remnant, chosen by grace.” He prophesies these things when he teaches that after the entrance into humanity of the one who proceeded “from the root of Jesse,” those who received this one would be a “remnant, chosen by grace.” It is they who will fill Israel as well as the other nations and the land of the Egyptians with the doctrine of Christ, and no one will stand in their way.
And we already observed in the preface to this commentary that sometimes the prophetic message is to be rendered literally and not allegorically, and sometimes, when the people are unwilling to listen, the spirit is forced to express the prophecy as an allegory. Therefore, the Word was forced to speak figuratively about “the rod from the root of Jesse” and “the blossom” and “the stump,” but now the Word is no longer obliged to speak allegorically about the righteous Jesse. So too, the statements about the beasts were really figurative statements about people who behaved like beasts, but now the nations whom they were said to rule are no longer depicted allegorically. Thus, one should affirm that among these the land of Egypt means the literal country of the Egyptians, but at the same time, the sea and river are allegorical expressions, in as far as he says that they will be laid waste at the prophesied time, when it is said that “the Lord will further display his hand.” In the addition, it is clear that others who are very similar to them in the deeds practiced among them will be born afterwards, from among whom the hand of the Lord led out through Moses the children of Israel from the land of Egypt and led them through the Red Sea. He led them “into the land of promise” which formerly had been occupied by other peoples. Now, in the one “from the root of Jesse,” the same hand of the Lord supplements the good things provided in the apostles of the Savior and in the Jews who were preachers of the saving gospel. And from people who were expected to be agitators he created zealots who stood unhindered against the whole world, even against Egypt itself, and no one stood in their way. They went down to destroy the idols of the Egyptians. Those who fled from Pharaoh and the Egyptians came out with Moses, but the disciples of Christ entered into Egypt voluntarily, preaching the saving word. And the sea was literally divided before those who were with Moses, and the water of the Nile changed into blood. But there were additional good things that were revealed as having occurred at that time: the Egyptian sea was made into a desert, 91 and their river was utterly abandoned, both of which were impediments to the preachers of the saving gospel, who could now traverse the lands of the Egyptians and indeed effect the overthrow of their superstitious polytheism. And the one preceding “from the root of Jesse” gave the knowledge of God and of his Christ to all. One should note that the text says that the Lord will make not the land of Egypt desolate but its sea, and this clearly refers to its many idolatries.
As the undesirable catches are cast back into the sea, is it not, therefore, appropriate to say that the tongue of godless and profane people who once did not know God is revealed to be that of Pharaoh, who said: “I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go”? The word prophesied what happened next. And thus the tongue of the sea of Egypt was accursed, so that those demons among it who once cried out oracles and divinations would be silent, and so that their fraudulent art of groaning through people would be undone. All these things were in fact fulfilled when the evangelical preaching was proclaimed to them in Egypt. And from among them and also among us ourselves, the all-powerful extinguished those who were supposed to be gods by the Egyptians and all the godless and irreligious people throughout the whole world who acted like the Egyptians in their idolatry. Then the sea, rising like a flood and covered with waves, enveloped the last desert. The text says that the Lord will make the sea of Egypt desolate, that is, their many idolatries. And not only will he make the sea desolate, but also he will lay his hand on its River, the Nile, which had always been associated with the kingdom of the Egyptians. It is thus clear that the violent wind should be understood to be the Roman ruler who earlier conquered the kingdom of the Egyptians. Therefore it has been undone, for the river was struck, sunk into deep gorges, transformed into seven gullies. One will understand this verse only when he perceives its deeper meaning. The River which was once a mighty current is the kingdom of Egypt, for it predominated over all nations in that area. But after it was struck and undone, certain regional rulers governed it for a time. For indeed the Libyans administered a part, and the Thebans a territory belonging to Egypt and Alexandria itself. And on the one hand, there were regions that were honored with political independence, where the governance was entrusted to the common people and citizens. But on the other hand, there were regions that were governed by soldiers and military forces, and these regions were administered by the great authority of the revealed rulers. Thereupon, being of no consideration, the gullies were rightly disregarded, for in comparison with the River that once rose like a flood against them—I am speaking of the king—which all at once and with one current washed up on both sides 92 of the nation of Egypt, it washed up with one royal and predominant power over all. Thus the Egyptian river was struck, and the regional gullies were set in its place in order that the rest of Egypt might be covered over with those who preach the gospel of Christ, no one standing in their way and no one hindering them.
