. . . the yoke that was formerly placed on their spoils and the rod that is on the neck of their spoils had been taken away. For the yoke that was placed on them was heavy to those souls who had been enslaved by the devil, and the fatal rod that was on their neck pressed against it and forced it to bend down. Once these had been taken away, it was quite right that those who divide these spoils should rejoice. And how the yoke and the rod that had been placed on their neck was taken away from them he makes quite clear when he says next: For he has scattered the rod of the exactors. But instead of the exactors, Aquila translates this phrase: the yoke of his burden and the rod on his shoulder, the stick of the punisher; and Symmachus says: the yoke of his burden and the rod on his shoulder, and the rod of the exactor was broken; and Theodotion likewise translated this word as the exactor. The exactor is singular and signifies the punisher (revealing the devil), who punishes and brings the souls of people to their end, and he exacts payment from those who are well supplied with sin by him. And he who stripped off the heavy yoke has broken even this rod of the exactor, but afterward it is probable that there were many others who worked together with the devil, and of these there were some who were exactors to him. For there were many who were punishers of the human race. He took away the yoke and the rod, and he did 65 these things against them on the day that was on Midian. In the story of Gideon in the book of Judges we read that the enemies were conquered not by arms but by an invisible and divine power. And so the enemies were thus conquered as on Midian with a hidden hand. And now the text says that the rod of the exactor (i.e., of the devil and of those who punish the souls of people with him) will be scattered.
