Conditions among them will escalate to such an extent that internecine war will erupt, as between the two tribes Ephraim and Manasseh, who were from one father, Joseph, who were united in one kingdom and who built one and the same city Samaria. They will rise up against each other, and they will devour the arms of one another. No longer devoting themselves to the war against Judah or the siege of Jerusalem, they will sharpen their own swords to their own hurt and slay themselves. And the wrath of God will not come on them until these things happen. And still further things will come on them. Just as God threatened that “he would put enmity between her and it,” “between the serpent and the woman,” so there will be enmity even between those who are good and amiable. Thus also now God proclaims that he will turn the harmony of those charged by the prophet to cacophony. All this parallels the saying of the Savior recorded in the Gospels: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace on the earth, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
