Прекрасным мне кажется делом советником в этом употребить Писание. Ибо где-то в пророчестве Исаии говорит Божий глас: Воззрите на Авраама отца вашего, и на Сарру, родившую вас (Ис 51:2). Конечно же, повеление такое дает слово блуждающим вне пути добродетели, чтобы, как на море унесенные с прямого пути, ведущего к пристани, исправляют ошибочное свое направление по усмотренному знаку, увидев поднимающийся с высокого места вверх факел или открывшуюся вершину какой-либо горной высоты, то подобно этому примером Сарры и Авраама направили снова путь свой в пристань Божией воли те, которые блуждают по житейскому морю с утратившим кормило умом.

But in order that you might not suffer these things, I exhort you still even now to return to me and to hear my words. Hear, O you who pretend to honor the Lord but do what is contrary to the will of the Lord, driving away what is righteous and making an enemy of the truth itself. And because of their excessive stupidity, those districts of the Jews who had seen the one only-begotten Word of God in an appearance like ours—that is, as one who had become a man—not only did they not understand the 321 mystery about him, but also, failing to understand, they were swift to vex and profane him in insolent voices. Precisely as I said, he made his auspicious glory and power visible to them, and he anticipates certain individuals who want to think less of him when he says: “Trust in the Lord.” Therefore, he then says that he who was made visible is himself Lord and God, anticipating as I said those who want to think and speak about him in an earthly way. What then do I say? Look at the solid rock that you hewed and to the hole of the pit that you dug. But instead of and to the hole, Symmachus says: To the cleft, and Aquila says: To an incision. And it seems that in this verse, the word foreshadows that very “rock” that welcomed the body of the Savior, in which “Joseph” dug the grave “for his own new tomb.”

Обращение к верным
Здесь он, оставив неверующих, обращает речь к уверовавшим: ведь это их он называет ревнителями Бога и праведности. Он укрепляет их, потому что их мало, и призывает их посмотреть на предков, напоминает об Аврааме и Сарре и о многих тысячах происшедших от них. То же самое сделано и в божественных Евангелиях: Не бойся, малое стадо, ибо Отец ваш благоволил дать вам царство (Лк 12:32).

Leaving aside here those who have disbelieved, he addresses his words to those who have believed; for these he names lovers both of God and of righteousness. But he encourages them, as they are few, and urges them to look to their forefathers, and he reminds them of Abraham and Sarah and of the many myriads that have sprung from them. He has done this also in the divine gospels; "Do not be afraid," it says, "little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom." So also here. Look to the solid rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. He calls the old age of Abraham a solid rock, and Sarah not a pit but a hole of a pit because it was waterless; "for it had ceased," it says, "to be with Sarah after the manner of women." Thus also the divine apostle said: "Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations," against hope because of old age and the nature of Sarah—for she was barren—but in hope of the divine promise. And again: "He did not consider his own body, already dead, being about a hundred years old, nor the deadness of Sarah's womb; but he did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was str<e>ngthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what he had promised he was also able to perform." Thus also here the prophetic word, having said: Look to the solid rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug, has made the meaning clearer through what follows
