Concerning this grace he also says: And the Lord of hosts was enraged with anger against his people. He willed that they should be his very own people and that they should be called as such, but they were not willing. And he laid his hand on them and struck them—all these things because of the reasons that have been considered. But he adds to these statements, saying: And the mountains were provoked, and their carcasses became like dung in the middle of the road. In all these things his wrath has not turned away, but his hand is still high. He thereby indicates that there will be an invasion of their enemies and a multitude of the slain, so that the mountains will be filled with the dead bodies and the whole land will be full of their carcasses. The wrath of God evidently continued to be against them and has not turned away, as such things were exhibited among them, and the hand of God was still high against them because they continued to sin. Note exactly what the verse says: His hand is still high. It says that the wrath of God endures against them still, even now, which the apostle also states when he says: “But God’s wrath has come on them at last.” He states next through these things that the mountains and the land were about to be filled with their carcasses.

He sketches out the military opposition and invasion of the Gentiles against the people because they did not receive the new law and the word of the Lord of hosts. He states that the mountains were provoked. In Aquila’s version, this reads rather: violently agitated; and in Symmachus’s version: greatly troubled. The statement their carcasses became like dung in the middle of the road informs us that all these things happened among them during the invasion of their enemies. They did not do this to themselves, 35 but God brought the siege on those who had been accused, and they were dragged and carted away in a single night.

содрогнутся горы. Когда Господь изольет Свой гнев, вся природа содрогнется (Ис. 2:19, 21; Ис. 13:4, 13; Ис. 24:18, 19). В противоположность этому, милость Божия, ставшая причиной искупления, не поколеблется (Ис. 54:10).

трупы... на улицах. Мертвых будет так много, что их некому будет убирать.

And the Lord Sabaoth was angered against his people and he laid his hand upon them and struck them; and he was provoked against the mountains, and their dead bodies became as dung in the middle of the road. Through the mountains he alluded to the demons honored by them in the mountains. And on account of all the things said, he filled both the mountains themselves and the roads with the dead, cast upon the earth like dung, according to what was said by the psalmist: “They became as dung for the earth.” And for all this his anger was not turned away, but still his hand is high. For neither did they desist from their lawlessness. For this he also says in what comes after: “And the people did not turn back until they were struck.” And the phrase: his hand is high, he has used metaphorically of those who flog a servant with a strap or a rod and raise their hand.
