And I do not expect that they will be able to save themselves from the things that come on them next; I am speaking about the verse and he will appear in Zion like a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land, and the things that follow this verse, certain of which did not find their fulfillment during the times of Zerubbabel. For this reason, as if the prophecy had been fulfilled in the events that transpired in Egypt during the times of Jeremiah, the Word starts a new theme and prophesies concerning the appearance of the Christ of God. For he alone among men appeared as the righteous king. And his apostles led with the judgment of him who was their own king as well as the king of the church. After commenting on Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning those who went down to Egypt and after prophesying the return from Babylon to Jerusalem and the resettling of the people that would soon be in the land of Judea, immediately following he next delivers an oracle about Christ, saying that he would be the prophesied one who would bring about good for all people.
And, since he had prophesied the descent into Egypt many years before it happened, during the times of Jeremiah the prophet, and the return after the captivity, it was therefore nothing extraordinary for him to prophesy events that would happen even further on in the future at the coming of Christ, who is called a righteous king, ruling in righteousness, according to the other Greek translations. For inasmuch as the “righteousness of God has been revealed” through his gospel not only “to the Jews” but also “to the Greeks,”and the knowledge of God has been preached to people throughout the whole world, the Christ of God therefore reigned in righteousness over this new kingdom. For it was neither in looking for human esteem nor for honor and glory from among people that he ruled the kingdom but in righteousness. Therefore, his rulers also did not exercise their authority in order to be promoted to worldly honors but ruled for judgment. Therefore, according to the other Greek translations, the text reads: And the rulers will rule for judgment.
But instead of the man will be hiding his words, Symmachus says: And there will be a man as a hiding place from the wind and 207 a shelter from the storm. Therefore, what sort of man will he be if not the one who is called righteous above? For he is this man, who is not a man by nature but by nature superior to a man. But there will be a man concealing his divinity. Therefore, indeed according to Symmachus, the text reads: As a hiding place from the wind and a shelter from the storm, and according to Aquila: As hiding from the wind and a hiding place from turbulence. You see that the Word presents the hidden reality of his humanity, since, according to the Septuagint, he delivered “all that he said in parables.” Because of this it has been said: He will be hiding his words and will be hidden as from rushing water. For rushing water destroyed many of the people of the Jews. For this reason, on the one hand, he hid him from them and concealed his words from them, but on the other hand, he manifested them to his disciples. Therefore, he says that he will be manifest in his church when he continues on and says next: And he will appear in Zion like a river. And who will appear if not the righteous king himself? For he will appear like a rushing, glorious river. And what is this Zion if not the place that receives those who had been hidden and are now again manifest? The text informs us about this great river when it says: Like a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land.
