In the prophecy concerning those who fled to Egypt for refuge, the Word vividly calls to mind the universal judgment of God and resumes speaking about the above-discussed threat. He deems miserable those who went down to Egypt in an attempt to secure aid. Because they thought that God would not be able to save them, although he had ordered them to remain in their place and to be rescued from the hand of the enemies, they sought their salvation from idolaters. It was they who are recorded as boasting before the God of Israel, they who placed their trust in the Egyptians and chariots and horses, failing to remember that their God at one time “threw the chariots of Pharaoh and his host into the sea.” Therefore, the Word censures them for acting as they did, because they did not place their trust in the Holy One of Israel. Thus concluding these things, he again laments those who had fled down to Egypt: Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, those who trust in horses and chariots; for there will be many chariots and horsemen, very great in number; and they did not trust in the Holy One of Israel, and they did not seek the Lord. They supposed, he says, that the horse was stronger than his help, since they learned that the Egyptians used many horses and chariots.
