71.Итак, верблюда можно понимать как образ языческого народа. Лев, ищущий, кого поглотить (1 Пет. 5:8), гонит этого верблюда в пустыню, отягощенного сокровищами, согласно пророческим видениям, ибо в скорби и тоске лев и детеныш льва: к змеям и порождениям летучих змей они несли на ослах и верблюдах богатство свое . И правильно, что верблюд избран образом языческого народа, потому что изуродованный безобразием суеверий языческий народ, до того как уверовал, являл вид звериного уродства, нелепые ноги, отвратительное обличье.

Next, he adds: The vision of the quadrupeds in the wilderness. In affliction and distress, there are a lion and a lion’s whelp, thence also asps and the offspring of flying asps. And I suppose that through these things he is intimating a message about the gods of the Egyptians. For it seems that every kind of four-footed creature is considered to be a god among them. But instead of the vision of the quadrupeds in the wilderness, Symmachus says the burden of the beasts of the south, and all the other Greek translations also render this phrase: Beasts of the south. Surely then the Septuagint is referring to the land of the Egyptians which lies in the southern regions when it says: The vision of the quadrupeds in the wilderness. For the whole wilderness was then God’s and had been filled with quadrupeds which were deified among them and which the demons animated among them. It was for this reason that they were said to be in affliction and in distress. For due to much distress of soul and due to an excess of affliction they publicly proclaimed their gods among them. And it was precisely the evil demons who were afflicting and distressing their souls, among whom there were lions, asps and their offspring, snakes, and a myriad of other reptiles 196 as well as beasts. These were the perceived creatures that were the images of the evil demons that were being deified throughout the whole of Egypt. For truly they honored lions and asps and snakes and a myriad of other creatures as gods. And, therefore, they have named their cities after the animals they suppose to be gods. Thus, from the word for lion, they call the city “Leonto,” and from the word for “dog,” they call the city “Kuno,” and they have named other cities after words for other animals too. Therefore, the prophet saw this vision of the quadrupeds in the wilderness of Egypt, and those of the Jews who fled for refuge carried off their own wealth to them. For they delivered the treasuries of their own soul over to the Egyptian error. And the text says that they carried away their own wealth, thereby clearly indicating their own irrationality and folly, on donkeys and camels.

The vision of the four-footed beasts in the wilderness. These things also have the same meaning; for he accuses those who fled to Egypt and who despised the divine help. He calls Jerusalem a wilderness; for it was a wilderness at that time, having been laid waste by Nebuchadnezzar. He calls those "four-footed beasts" who were sick with irrationality and had not acknowledged their benefactor and maker. For "man, being in honor, did not understand; he was compared to the senseless beasts and was made like them." In affliction and in distress, a lion and a lion’s whelp, thence also asps and the offspring of flying asps, who carried their treasures on donkeys and their wealth on camels to a nation which will not profit them.
