With these prophecies concerning “the day of vengeance” having been delivered, and with the preceding having been laid out, the prophet commences from a new starting point, threatening the removal of the graces from among the former people of God, which he says will be taken away from them neither because of their idolatries nor because of certain other practices but because of one truly godless, wicked and evil counsel against the Lord. Therefore, in view of all the threats against them, he brings on another accusation, saying: “They have proclaimed their sin like that of Sodom; and they have made it plain. Woe to their soul, because they have given evil counsel against themselves, saying: ‘Let us bind the just, for he is a nuisance to us.’” This was the reason for all the threats. I suppose one is forced to come to the conclusion that these things did finally occur after the saving advent. For this reason the prophet says, The Lord will take away from Jerusalem and from Judah a strong man and a strong woman, or, as in Aquila’s version, the supports and pillars, or, as in Symmachus’s version, the foundations and substructures. You will perceive in these phrases the very apostolic word, which calls what suits the life according to God the “pillar and bulwark.” In every society as among the former people of God there were certain figures who were like “bulwarks” and foundations of the entire nation, whom the Word threatens will be taken away. For, later, there will be neither bread nor water, and the strength of bread, and the strength of water will be taken away. 22 This will sound familiar to you, because another prophet has said: “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘and I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the word of the Lord.’” The nourishing bread of the soul and likewise the spiritual drink is the word. The Jewish people also suppose that they partake in this bread and drink in their pursuit of the divine Scriptures and their elaboration of their thorough knowledge and scholarly endeavors, but you will not find the stay of the nourishing words and the refreshment of the life-giving fountain among them.

посох и трость. Посох - емкий символический образ. В руке царя посох символизирует власть, в руке странника - опору. Трость - обычно под этим словом подразумеваете мерило (и в прямом смысле и в переносном - "мерило справедливости") и бич. Господь отнимет у царей иудейских власть, у судей - право судить, народ лишит опоры.
подкрепление хлебом... водою. Прямой смысл понятен - это бедствия при осаде города врагом. Иносказательно же хлеб - это слово Божие, а вода - надежда, обращенная к Господу и питающая человека.
