And during the same time, when it is prophesied that these things will occur, the Word says that five cities will be established in Egypt, speaking and swearing not in the language of the Egyptians but in Chananite. They once believed in the gods of their ancestors, but now they adhere to the God who is known among the Jews; they believe in the name of the Lord of hosts. And this was the one “on a swift cloud” who lived among them. And what is remarkable is that the Hebrew text uses the word current among the Egyptians, for the Egyptians call Hebrew the Chananite language. Whenever they use Hebrew words in the church of God, they are “alleluia” and “amen” and “Sabbath” and such others as are found in the divine Scripture. And when it says that when they swear to the Lord and make an oath in his name as well as in the name of the gods of their ancestors, they honor the Lord of hosts, who is known only among the Jews, 133 it is not necessary to say anything concerning the truth of the same prophetic and sanctioned voice. And it is important not to misunderstand that, although the cities in the prophecy are said to be five, they count as one. And for this reason they all are called by one name, Asedek, although Symmachus translates the name Sun. Therefore one might conclude that this city is the holy church of God, especially since in the Septuagint it is called Asedek, which means righteousness. In Symmachus it is called sun, about which it has been said: “For those who fear my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings.” To be accurate, the city is called Areopolis in the Hebrew, according to which the final phrase would be translated: The one city will be called the city of the earth. For of all the cities in the world, God is seated only in this one, and so it has been said: “Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God.”
And one could say that there are five cities of God within the church, for the various offices could be distributed into five divisions. Thus, one would count the first division as that of the bishops, the second as that of the presbyters, the third as that of the deacons, the fourth as that of the enlightened in Christ, and to these one might add those who happen to be present. And so these offices would come to five divisions in the church of God. For this reason it has been said that five cities will speak in one language, which the Egyptians supposed was Chananite and in which they will swear by the name of the Lord of hosts. One begins to see the wonder of the word when he understands that the Egyptians used to be the most superstitious, and of all people enemies of the Jews and accustomed to blaspheming their God. It is said in the Jewish Scriptures that they will adopt the fear of him who bears the title among the Jews the Lord of hosts, so that they will swear oaths by his name. And he rightly said that the church was the city of the light of the sun because Christ is the light of God enlightening every man, coming into the world.” Therefore, the text reads in Symmachus’s version: The one city will be called the city of the sun.
