In place of the Septuagint’s translation in three years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab will be dishonored, the Hebrew text and the other Greek translations insert a conjunction in between the clauses, thus presenting the meaning more accurately. For in Aquila’s version, this verse reads: In three years of a hired worker; and in Symmachus’s version: From then even until now, the Lord spoke, saying: “In three years as counted by a hired worker”; and in Theodotion’s version: From then even until now, the Lord spoke, saying, “In three years as the years of a hired worker.” Then, as a new clause, the other Greek translations and the Hebrew text say: The glory of Moab will be dishonored with all its great population. For when the conjunction is inserted, it presents another meaning than when and the glory of Moab will be dishonored immediately follows. And, as discussed above, it was revealed that in three years all the aforementioned that the Lord spoke to Moab through the prophet would happen. The Lord hired the prophet and kept him busy with the prophecy concerning these things. For the prophet did not put forth the entire and extended word of the prophecy as a single piece as we read it when we gather together in a crowd for the public reading, but all that was said to him was delivered separately and in parts at different periods of time over the course of three years. And so, the Lord spoke these things in three years through the prophet, and this was the conclusion of the words of God: And the glory of Moab will be dishonored with all its great population, and only the smallest and least respected will be left behind. This too was literally fulfilled, as is obvious to those who travel to these places.

And now the Lord has spoken, saying: In three years of a hireling the glory of Moab will be dishonored with all its great wealth, and it will be left small and not honored. The decree is humane; for he limited the punishment to three years and He compared him to a hired hand awaiting a fixed time and being cheered by the hope of the end. After the fixed time, however, he does not promise her the old prosperity but few inhabitants and these not rulers; for she will be left few in number and not honored. Knowing these things, therefore, let us propitiate the judge by keeping His commandments and come before His face with confession, so that we may escape the experience of these sorrows and, governed by Him, we may sail through the present life with favorable winds and anchor in His calm harbors, singing hymns to Him and His only-begotten Son and the all-holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
