Therefore, he then addresses the interwoven existence of the unique Son of God, who assumed the existence of a son of man, demonstrated here in this text, and who experienced the realities of human existence and lived his life as a member of the human race. He then writes: He shall not judge on the basis of reputation or convict on the basis of report, but he shall administer justice to a humble one and convict the humble ones of the earth. Symmachus translates this verse somewhat more clearly: He shall neither judge by what he sees nor shall he convict by what he hears, but he shall judge the laborers in righteousness and convict the poor of the earth in uprightness. And one finds in the Gospels that our Savior and Lord did not judge on the basis of reputation. “Showing no partiality to anyone,” he once fearlessly convicted the scribes and Pharisees and the rulers within the temple precincts, and he said to them: “The kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it.” And he did not convict on the basis of report. For indeed they approached him and said: “Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God truthfully, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men.” But he did not convict on the basis of their report. For this reason “Jesus, aware of their malice, answered, ‘Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?’” And 83 he administered the justice of the humble, and he convicted the humble of the earth or, in Symmachus’s version, he convicted the poor in uprightness. The poor, we presume, are those whom he congratulated when he said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God.” Such were his apostles and disciples, whom he refuted and once said even to them: “Are you also still without understanding?” and again: “Do you not yet perceive or understand?” and once he said to Peter: “O man of little faith, why did you doubt?” And we see that he rebuked and refuted them in an abundance of other passages, and knowing this in advance, the prophecy foretells the above.
Then he adds next: He shall strike the earth with the word of his mouth, and with breath—through his lips he shall do away with the impious. And you will understand this after you hear what he said next: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” And the “sword” was the word of his mouth, by which he was doing away with the earth and the earthly mindedness of those who have believed in him. And by his spirit he shall do away with the impious, “rebuking” the godless and impious demons and driving them far away by the word borne through his lips, so that they cried and said: “What have you to do with us, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come to torment us before the time? We know who you are—the holy One of God!”
