The text then reads: Because this is what the Lord says: See, I myself turn to them like a river of peace and like a wadi overflowing the glory of nations. Again, in this verse, he adds the phrase glory of nations to the new Zion and new Jerusalem spoken of above, and he compares the peace that will be given to the nations with a rushing river. The text speaks of this river in other passages: “The river of God was filled with water,” and: “The river’s strong currents make glad the city of God.” And the text says that a deep peace will flow over the church of God like a river or a powerful stream, for their children shall be carried on shoulders and comforted on knees.
And these things were stated in the promises above, indicating that “foster fathers” would support those in the church who are still infants and are nourished with milk. These “foster fathers” are perhaps teachers or those who legitimately preside over the church of God or perhaps divine and heavenly angels. For our Savior clearly stated this when he said: “Do not despise one of these little ones” in my church, “for their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.” Therefore, the mighty will lift up the weak on shoulders, and they shall comfort them on knees.

For thus says the Lord: Behold, I am turning toward them like a river of peace, and like a torrent flooding over with the glory of nations. He says these things about the holy apostles, whom he made famous and much talked of among all people. He compared their prize and glory to a river and a flooding torrent. Their children will be lifted onto shoulders and will be comforted upon knees. The divine apostle gave of this nourishment to the Corinthians, saying: "I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able." And elsewhere one can hear them saying: "Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk." Thus again the divine Paul exhorts the Ephesians, saying: "I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you," and to the Corinthians: "I urge you, brothers, that you all say the same thing," and to the Romans: "I urge you, therefore, brothers, through the mercies of God," and again: "Our affections are opened to you, Corinthians, our heart is enlarged, you are not restricted in us."
