Therefore, he continues on to say: So that together they may see and know and consider and understand that the hand of the Lord has done these things, and the Holy One of Israel has exhibited them. For if it was not God and the hand of the Lord through his apostles who effected such a change among the nations, how would the churches of God ever establish themselves in such desolate places as these nations, and how would the spiritual waters in these places abound everywhere on the earth, so that the nations that were once desolate and without water are cultivated with the word of godliness? And how else would they produce shoots that rise high into the air, at once rooted firmly in the ground (i.e., in the mortal and human life) and at the same time lifted up above in the heights so that they extend to the kingdom of heaven and set their hopes on another world? For this reason, they are compared with fragrant plants that soar to the heights.
