Then, for this very reason, they profess with their lips that they serve God, but in secret they perform base actions, being defiled with sorceries and uncleanness and a myriad of other unlawful deeds. Being occupied with all these things, they did not have God in view, and thus he justly deems them unhappy when he says next: Ah, those who make plans deeply and not through the Lord, although Symmachus translated this verse: Ah, the depths that conceal the plan of the Lord, for their works were in darkness, and they said: “Who sees us, and who knows what we are doing here well out of the way?”

These things contain a general accusation against those who think they will escape the overseeing eye of the universe, and a specific one against the scribes and Pharisees, who, using deceit as a collaborator, brought many questions to the savior, trying, as the evangelist says, to trap him in his speech, but they also often took counsel on how to destroy him.
