The phrase Lord of Hosts is interpreted as Lord of divine powers or Lord of armies. The word refers to our Savior and Lord, the only-begotten Word of God, who, because of the deeds of those accused of being murderers, warns: Ah, mighty ones of Israel. The Gospel says something similar about them when it says, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” All this was proclaimed to the rulers and the powerful of the nation accusing them of distortion. The Sovereign, the Lord of Hosts says that woes will be on them. Once the wrath of his avenging and punitive power has been revealed, it will not abate, neither will it cease, he tells us, until it has punished them.

Therefore the Lord, the Master, Sabaoth, the ruler of Israel, says these things: Woe to the mighty in Israel, for my anger will not cease against my adversaries, I will execute judgment on my enemies. As for "Lord Sabaoth," Symmachus and Theodotion translated it "Lord of hosts," but Aquila "Lord of armies." But the meaning is consistent; for we are accustomed to call the military rolls a 'host'. And the king of the heavens has an invincible army, the invisible powers. He also calls him the potentate of Israel as the one who showed his own power through the extraordinary wonders which he performed on behalf of Israel. He calls them adversaries as always resisting, and enemies as being hostile.
