He continues on: Therefore hear, you who are afflicted, who are drunk, but not with wine. And he continues on, according to Symmachus: Then says 328 your master and your God, who will fight on behalf of his people: see, I removed from your hand the cup of agony, the mixing bowl, the cup of wrath; you shall not continue to drink it any longer. And the Word promises Jerusalem that he will take the cup of wrath from it, if it repents. For instead of I will take, the text reads: See, I removed. This is if you do what I commanded you and if you obey what the Word said to you: “Awake, awake! Stand up, O Jerusalem.” For the aforesaid promises were said under the condition that it “awakened” and rose up. But if it does not obey and does not rise up and stand up from its fall, but rather remains disobedient and inattentive, then it alone will be responsible that the promises did not happen. And these things were said to the entire nation of the Jews, for they were not addressed to the stones and structures of the place, neither to the soil nor to the dust of the earth there. And you will understand that the message of the Word even from another prophet among them was said to them: “He that falls, does he not rise up? And he that turns away, does he not return? Why do you turn away in a shameless turning away, says the Lord.” Therefore, he promises that it will rise up and no longer drink the cup of wrath. For it will be given to its adversaries. Therefore, according to Symmachus, the text reads: And I will place it in the hands of those who carried you away from home, of those who said to your soul, “Bow down, that we may pass by.” And you put down your back as the ground and as a pathway for those traveling by.

Thus says the Lord your God, who judges his people. Through the names of intimacy he encourages. Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of falling, the chalice of my wrath, and you will no longer drink it. He foretells the destruction of the Babylonians. For since Nebuchadnezzar came against them four times—first in the third year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, second in the eleventh year of the same king, third in the time of Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, and fourth in the time of Zedekiah—, he promises to no longer bring upon them the cup of punishment by means of the Babylonians. For they drank by means of these, and finally by means of the Romans, at which time they were completely stripped of divine care, both the histories teach and the events testify. Therefore, the phrase, "You will no longer drink it," he says with reference to the Babylonians.
