He calls on women because there were no men to be found among them who were worthy of salvation. Therefore, he encourages the women to come quickly to witness the spectacle of the incredible and marvelous works so that they might come and enlighten “the people sitting in darkness” and their abandoned city. Therefore, according to Aquila, the text reads: The women are coming and enlightening it; but according to Symmachus: The women are coming and making it visible. And the it is the city mentioned above, concerning which it has been said: For the fortified city which alone was beautiful has been abandoned and left behind as a desert. And these things have been fulfilled literally and in history at the resurrection of our Savior, for we read in the Gospel of Matthew: “There were many women there, looking on from afar, who had followed him from Galilee, ministering to him; among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee”; and in the Gospel of Luke: “And those women who had come with him from Galilee followed,” and the rest. Therefore, the people did not have understanding in as far as they were not persuaded by the preaching of the apostles, and yet the word was received by the Gentiles. Because of this, the divine Spirit calls the women to bear witness to the preached word, but later he saw that the people were blind. Therefore, he says, he that made them will not have compassion, nor will he that formed them have mercy.

And after a time there will be nothing green 11in it because it has been dried up. He says they will be led away captive, and their land will be desolate, but they will return again and dwell in it; after a time, however, it will be fruitless, and will not even sprout anything green because it has been dried up. The word signifies the present fruitlessness of the Jews; for nothing has blossomed among them, since they do not receive the rain of grace. Women coming from a spectacle, come hither; for it is not a people that has understanding. Therefore he who made them will not pity them, nor will he who formed them have mercy on them. He calls “women” the cities of the nations or the churches in them that behold the desolation of Jerusalem, and he exhorts them to flee their unbelief; for they do not wish to understand what is profitable, for which reason they have been deprived of pardon.
