“For God shows no partiality.” Because of this, in the middle of the refutations against the other tribes, the Word also throws in a refutation concerning Zion, in which God places the inhabitants of Jerusalem along with the other tribes. And God votes against them. It has been said also in Amos, from the mouth of God to the Jewish people: “ ‘Are you not like the Ethiopians to me?’ says the Lord. ‘Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Cappadocia and the Syrians from the pit? Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on all the kingdoms of the earth.’” And it is also certain that the words of the ravine of Zion discussed above have not been said concerning Zion itself but concerning the ravine that is adjacent to it. For this reason, the present word says: “And your choicest ravines will be filled with chariots, and the cavalry will block your gates.” I suppose that through these things, when he commands those who were accepted among the other tribes to explain this from the writings of the other tribes, God is speaking of the casting aside and the final disposition of Israel. And I suppose also that the fall of Jerusalem is clearly indicated when he speaks of the ravine of Zion.
144 In any event, God finds fault with those who have fallen from the height of the godly government of the Jewish nation; it is just as though they have fallen down into the ravine of the depths of evil. For indeed “Mount” Zion is “high,” on which the temple of God was built. Therefore, the text says: “Go up on a high mountain, you who bring good tidings to Zion,” and: “You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.” And in the above verse, it is seen that Mount Zion signifies the evangelical word. And those who have fallen away from this hope into the adjacent ravine have fallen into Zion. For evil is next to every virtue, and whoever slips from virtue falls into evil. And thus also everyone who fails to attain faith is diverted into faithlessness. And therefore the people of the circumcision have fallen from the height of the gospel and from “the heavenly Zion,” and being alienated, they have been diverted into the cliff of faithlessness. For this reason, God counted them as among the other nations. And so the prophecy adumbrates their final casting aside when he inscribed the word of the ravine of Zion. Because they were “puffed up without reason” and were in the depths of evil, he says to them: What has happened to you that you have all gone up to useless housetops?
