And he says that during the same day—that is, during the identified time—there will be a way among the Egyptians to the Assyrians, and the Assyrians will enter Egypt, and the Egyptians will go to the Assyrians, and the Egyptians will be subject to the Assyrians. And here I suppose that the Scripture is calling them Assyrians who are now called Syrians, for those who live in Syria and Mesopotamia were once called Assyrians. And the Egyptians and Assyrians were enemies, and they of all peoples continued to be adversaries. But now, the present word prophesies that there will be fellowship and interrelations among them, although this has never been the case yet. For, before the Roman rule, the Egyptians and the Assyrians had completely separate kingdoms. The Egyptians had the Ptolemaic empire, and the Syrians from Antioch and Demetrius. And Judea lay exactly in the middle and was governed by its own rulers. And the nation of the Jews was caught in the middle when Syria waged war against it and when the Ptolemies waged war against it. But the Syrians were always enemies with the Egyptians, and the Egyptians fought with the Syrians, and thus they were segregated and defensive in their stance toward one another. Indeed, such things happened in the old days, but the present word preaches that there will be the deepest peace in Egypt and fellowship and interrelations after the arrival of the Lord, saying: There will be a way among the Egyptians to the Assyrians, and the Assyrians will enter Egypt, and the Egyptians will go to the Assyrians, and the Egyptians will be subject to the Assyrians.

In that day there will be a way from Egypt to the Assyrians, and the Assyrians will come to Egypt, and the Egyptians will go to the Assyrians; and the Egyptians will serve the Assyrians. Of old, the Syrians were also called Assyrians. Therefore, it signifies the intermingling with the Syrians and Egyptians that happened after this, during the subjugation of the Egyptians. For indeed, in the time of our fathers, the rule was entrusted to the province of Syria; and this one, sitting in Antioch, the metropolis of the Syrians, to the Egyptians .............. |126 b| Therefore, through these things the prophecy has declared the great change of the Egyptians. But if anyone does not accept this interpretation, one must know that the prophets prophesy different things that will happen at different times. For this same prophet, having foretold above to the Jews the saving birth of Emmanuel, immediately connected the events concerning Pekah and Rezin, for he said: «And the land which you fear shall be forsaken because of the two kings.» And this happened at the very time when the prophet prophesied it, but the events concerning Emmanuel came to their conclusion after more than six hundred years; nevertheless, the prophecies are connected, and there is nothing that separates them. Thus, therefore, we shall also understand the prophecy concerning Egypt, that those things signifying piety happened long ages later, while the events concerning the Assyrians reached their conclusion at that time, as a confirmation of the longer-term prophecy. And that the Egyptians attacked the Assyrians—for Pharaoh Necho did this—both the second book of Chronicles and the fourth of Kings teach. And the Assyrians attacked them, and the Egyptians served the Assyrians, and this happened in the time of Nebuchadnezzar.
