Finally, that we might know that the apostle did not speak fortuitously and as it pleased him in passing (as they think), but in a con-sidered fashion and circumspectly, and has spoken in a way so that every aspect protects him against the Cretans, he says, “This testimony is true”; not “this entire poem” from which the “testimony” was taken, not the entire work, but merely “this testimony,” this brief line in which they are called liars. And assuredly he who agrees with merely one part of a poem should be believed to have rejected the rest. Now the sense in which the Cretans are branded as liars, and the Galatians as foolish, or Israel as stiff-necked, or each individual province by their own unique vice, we have explained in our commentary on Paul’s epistle to the Galatians. And since there is nothing more which we can bring forth here, we are content with that.
Therefore, he says, “Rebuke them severely,” for they are “liars and evil beasts and idle bellies,” who persuade false things, who in the manner of beasts thirst for the blood of the deceived. And they do not “work quietly eating their own food.” “Their god is their belly and their glory is in their shame.” Moreover, “rebuke them that they may be sound in the faith.” He speaks of this “soundness of faith” also in what follows: “Bid the older men to be sober, honest, chaste, sound in faith, and in charity and in patience.” The soundness of doctrine is also named in a way that is similar to that of faith. He says, “There will be a time when they will not be content with sound doctrine.”There are also words of soundness of which he speaks to Timothy in the first epistle: “If someone teaches otherwise, and is not content with sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and which are in accordance with the piety of doctrine.” And in the second epistle: “Having an example of sound words, which you heard from me.” Those who have this soundness of faith and doctrine and words will not “attend to Jewish myths and the commands of men who turn themselves away from truth.”
