Let us “be content” with the Jews for a little while, and let us pa-tiently listen to the nonsense of those who are called wise among them; and then we will understand what are the “Jewish myths” without the authority of Scripture, without any claim on reason, of those who fab-ricate certain fabulous things, of whom Isaiah prophesied, saying, “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But without reason do they worship me, teaching the doctrines and commands of men.” The Savior approves this testimony in the Gospel and accuses them of having preferred the commands of men to the law of God. “For God says, ‘Honor father and mother’; but they have handed down that whoever says to his father and mother, ‘Any gift there is from me will be useful to you,’ and he has not honored his father and mother.”
If, after the coming of Christ, someone is “mutilated,” and not circumcised, he serves “Judaic myths” and the commands of men who turn away the truth. “For it is not the one manifest who is a Jew, but the one in secret; and circumcision is of the heart in the Spirit, not the letter.” If someone does not keep the Passover “with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth,” so that he removes from his soul all the “old leaven of malice and wickedness,” that person attends to “myths,” follows shadows, and neglects the truth. If someone does not rise up with Christ to seek not the things above, but the things below, and says, “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle, which things are unto corruption with their very use in accordance with the precepts and doctrines of men,” that person follows a justice that is not good, and “precepts that are not good.” But where there is truth and the spiritual law, there there are good justifications and the best precepts; the one who does such things will live in them.
