Then he says, “And whosoever will force you one mile, go with him still another two” Matt 5:41. The Lord commands us to be active and ready for every dutiful task. For he wants our good to be not so much from compulsion as from our own will, so that when we do more than what is asked of us by others, we may attain the glory of a greater reward. For it is the duty of complete love and perfect devotion of one’s own accord to offer more than you are asked. 2. Some have thought that the meaning of this section, that he who is forced one mile should go with him still another two, is to be understood spiritually in this fashion: if a nonbeliever, one who has not yet attained to the knowledge of the truth, makes mention of the one God the Father, the Creator of all things, as if coming by the road of the law, you should go with him still another two. That is, that after his profession of God the Father, you should lead this same person, by the way of truth, to the knowledge of the Son and the Holy Spirit, showing him that he must believe not only in the Father but also in the Son and the Holy Spirit.
