Pay careful attention to the text and sequence of the reading: for the eternal life that “God who does not lie promised before the eternal ages” is nothing else but the Word of God. For it says, He “manifested his word in his own time.” Therefore the eternal life that he had promised is itself his own Word, which was in the beginning with the Father. “And the Word was God,” “and the Word became flesh and dwelled among us.” But that the Word of God, that is, Christ himself, is life, is testified in another passage, which says, “I am the life.” But the life is not fleeting; it is not circumscribed by any time. On the contrary it is perpetual and eternal. It was manifested in the final age through the proclamation that was entrusted to Paul, doctor of the Gentiles, and teacher, in order to be proclaimed in the world and become known to men, “in accordance with the command of God our Savior,” who wanted to save us by fulfilling what he had promised.
